Anzio
You will see from the blog I wrote on my husband's grandfather that he was killed at Anzio in 1944.
Researching what happened to Edgar Frank Hallam in the lead up to his death on 12 February 1944 has introduced me to WW2 service records and war diaries at regiment and brigade level. Edgar was in 2nd Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment and their regiment war diary for the key period appears to have been lost. However, from the brigade war diary we were able to discover that he and five others were killed by an aeroplane bomb early in the morning of 12 February.
We have been looking into what Army gallantry awards were won at Anzio in the first month: from 22nd January to 24th February 1944. We have found 301 so far. We have included American awards where they have been made to British troops. We have not included Mentioned in Despatches (MID) as there are far too many and they are too difficult to pinpoint! We have also excluded the Royal Navy in order to focus on those who were boots on the ground.

It would be great to hear from anyone who was at Anzio. Email Andy direct at andyhallam@aol.com - he would love to hear their stories.
